Calm before the storm

Last year on this day the smoke had cleared and life was good.  Some may call it the calm before the storm as only a few short weeks away our world changed forever.  The MCG and Melbourne park in silhouette against the dawn skies.

Beer

Apparently I have a lot of beer photos.  This was taken at Lake Tyers in Gippsland.  Includes bonus bubbles

Fog

In 2015 I had an early morning walk in the Dandenong ranges national park. This is looking down Outlook track in the fog.  It was so quiet and beautiful.

Yellow

In 2019 I was looking for images that match the word yellow.  I found these dunes at Perry Sand hills outside of Wentworth in NSW.

Road to nowhere

Back in 2019 we were on a road trip and on this day we ended in Mildura in the North West of Victoria.  We went up this road on the way, which is the way into the sunset lakes national park.

In 2015 I attended White Night in Melbourne where I took this 8 second exposure at 4:15 am.  The girl in the white dress stood still for the entire time.  The rest are just ghosts in the machine.

WPP 2015 - Week 08 - Simplicity / Minimalism

Binary

There is nothing simpler in the computer world than binary.  Either something is on (1) or off (0).  The image illustrated is 1 + 1 = 2.  To understand this numbering system you need to look at each column from the right and double the number. so column 1 (the rightmost) = 1, column 2 = 2, column 3 = 4 and column 4 = 8.  So if column 4 has a one then it equals 8 and if column 2 has a 1 then it equals 2.  To get the value of the binary sequence you simply add the numbers together.  So in the picture you have 0 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 2.  If it had been written as 1010 then it would be 8 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 10.  This as simple as it gets and is the way that all computers run their programmed instructions.  EVERYTHING is either 1 or 0, on or off.  It doesn't get any simpler than that :)

White night

Five years ago Penny and I went to white night in Melbourne.  We got there at about 4am in the morning in an attempt to miss the crowds (Overnight they estimate that they had 500,000 visitors to the city).  We saw these three acting up for the cameras in the waterwall of the NGV.  Hopefully we can have big events like this in the future.

Horizon

Queensland's highest mountain "Mount Bartle Frere" (1,622 Metres) as seen from a Jetstar plane on the way to Cairns back in 2014.  The sea and sky become one at the horizon in this image.

Coastline

Some well known coastline.  This was used for the word time in a previous scavenger hunt.  The 12 Apostles on Victoria's Great Ocean Road.

Signs

Last year at this time I was looking for signs for the "12 Photography assignments".  This is one that I didn't use.  This was outside the Victorian College of the Arts in St Kilda Road.

#12PA2021F2 - Key

A key for a Yale lock.  In this case for a sliding door at the rear of our house.  I can honestly say that I have never used this key (there is another method to lock it) but I can report that it works.

Reflections on Pandemic

This book available on Amazon (Australian link here). Is a cooperative effort by a group of photographers in an attempt to make sense of the pandemic.  You can download a digital copy for free from here.  The image on the cover is mine and was taken on one of my first trips in to the Melbourne CBD for work during the lockdown.  What it shows is that life goes on.  There is always time for a morning cup of coffee.  The location is the corner of Spring and Lonsdale street in Melbourne.

Street artist

Street artist at work in Hosier lane Melbourne.  This was taken during the middle of our extreme lockdown in July last year.  I have never seen Hosier lane this empty.  It is a magnet for locals and tourists.

This image taken last year on this day, was taken at a spot that I have taken a large number of photos.  However I have never shared one from here.  It is the path leading to the cafe at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.  I have pictures here in different weather, times of day and even different lens and camera combinations.  While it is the same every time I visit it is subtly different.

Lock

And just like that we are back in lockdown...  AGAIN!!!

Smoke

Who could forget this time last year when the east coast of Australia was ablaze.  Here in Melbourne we were largely spared however the smoke arrived on this day.

This mornings sunrise.  Today I went for a ride on my eScooter on a track I usually ride during the day.  I captured this image from the highest point on my travels. The second image is fog over the fields also captured this morning

Before the world changed

On this day last year we were hearing of a pandemic in far off places.  Mere weeks from when this image was taken our world was changed dramatically.  Under the clocks at Flinders Street station before the morning rush.

 On this day...  (Actually it was yesterday in 2016) I was taking photos for a play by Katherine Phelps called Heard of Elephants.  This was one of the actors whose name escapes me but this was the picture I took as she entered the room.
